FAQs About Bernedoodles

Answers To Frequently Asked Questions About Bernedoodles

Bernedoodles are one of the most popular designer dog breeds in the US and Canada, and their popularity has exploded over the last couple of years. A Bernedoodle is a cross between two smart, well-tempered breeds: the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle. They come in multiple sizes, but Mini Bernedoodles tend to be the most popular. We get a lot of Bernedoodle questions, so we’re collecting the most common ones here. We’ll keep updating this post as new questions come in. Are Bernedoodles completely hypoallergenic?

Bernedoodles are often considered hypoallergenic because they inherit the poodle’s low-shedding coat. However, first-generation Bernedoodles (F1) still carry some Bernese coat genes, so they may shed a bit. To maximize hypoallergenic traits, pick an F1b or backcross Bernedoodle (about 75% poodle); these pups have the best chance of a very low-shed coat.

Is a male or female Bernedoodle better?

Both can be great, but they can differ in personality. Males (any breed) can be more stubborn but often very affectionate and entertaining. Females (any breed) are often more obedient and easier to train.

That said, you can’t perfectly predict personality. Puppies from the same litter can be totally different, and training plus socialization matter a lot.

I’m getting a dog for the first time. Is a Bernedoodle a good first dog?

Yes. They’re intelligent, social, loyal, and they tend to do very well with children and other dogs. Training and early socialization make a big difference.

Are Bernedoodles AKC registered?

No. Bernedoodles aren’t recognized by the AKC because the AKC doesn’t recognize designer breeds.

All of our purebred parents at Hoosier Canines are AKC Registered. Our Bernedoodles are CKC Registered.

Are Bernedoodles aggressive?

No. They’re generally calm, well-tempered, adaptable, and very trainable. They love affection and usually don’t respond well to harsh handling. Socialize them well so they don’t become spoiled.

How big is a fully grown Bernedoodle?

  • Standard Bernedoodle: 70–90 pounds, 23–29 inches at the shoulder
  • Mini Bernedoodle: 25–50 pounds, 18–22 inches at the shoulder
  • Tiny Bernedoodle: 10–25 pounds, 11–17 inches at the shoulder

Do Bernedoodles bark?

Yes. All dogs bark, and Bernedoodles are no exception. The good news is their calmer demeanor usually means they don’t overdo it, and barking can be shaped with training.

Are Bernedoodles high-maintenance?

Yes. Their coat needs regular brushing to prevent tangles and matting, which can lead to skin irritation and other issues. Professional grooming is also important, usually every 2–3 months. Make sure you’ve got the time and budget for coat care.

Do Bernedoodles like water and swimming?

Many do. A lot of Bernedoodles enjoy water and will swim gladly, but some don’t. If you want a water-loving dog, start gentle exposure early so they can build comfort over time.

Can I leave my Bernedoodle home alone for a long time?

They bond strongly with their people and often want to be involved in everything. If left alone too long, they can develop separation anxiety. Crate training early can help but we don’t recommend leaving them at home alone for long periods. Bringing them with can create a stronger bond and help them develop.
